Boid on the Ewangelyon da-Mfarreshê

In the phrase ܐܘܢܓܠܝܘܢ ܕܡܦܖܫܝ Ewangelyon da-Mfarreshê or Ewangelyon da-Mfarshê the second word is a plural participle pa’el (=Hebrew pi’el). In the singular, mefarrêsh means someone that separates and mefarrash means something that has been separated. In the plural there is no way of telling the active from the passive (= Hebrew pu’al): both become mefarreshê (third vowel being the neutral vowel) or mefarshê. I gave you a translation “the Gospel of those that separate”. It would be more natural to interpret “the Gospel of the separated items”. The gospel is not one of the books, it is the whole. Notice the implication that the four have been made separate, not that they just are separate. This is the traditional title of the Old Syriac Gospels.
