Boid on Pilate's Summoning to Rome
There was a tradition that Pilate was called to account for the execution of Jesus. Can the petition by the Samaritan Council (Boulê) to the Emperor that caused him to be summoned to Rome be connected with the execution of Jesus? There are difficulties, but they might be resolvable. What about the dates? Josephus puts the massacre of Samaritans right at the end of Pilate's career in Palestine and says that by the time Pilate got to Rome Tiberius had died. As you had worked out for yourself). This is too late to be connected with the execution of Jesus. Could it simply be that Christian tradition knew of Pilate's repentance (or perhaps regret at a politically messy decision) over the execution of Jesus as well as his being summoned to Rome AND FUSED THE TWO? Or could it be that the Samaritans massacred by Pilate were followers of Jesus, some years after his execution? ONE MIGHT ARGUE THAT IT WAS THE MECHANISM FOR FUSING THE TRADITIONS OF PILATE'S REPENTANCE FOR THE EXECUTION OF JESUS AND THE MASSACRE OF THE SAMARITANS.
