On Vatican Conspiracies

As a general comment, claims that some book or other perished because of some act by the Vatican always collapse with the observations that the Vatican does not rule over the Church in all countries, and didn’t do so even before the split at the Reformation. What could the Vatican do about a book held by Greek or Russian or Syrian or Ethiopian or Iranian or Indian Christians? The same applies to Jewish books. How could the Vatican destroy books in Morocco or Iraq or the Yemen? Of course the Vatican is a menace [Australian usage: a menace is an annoyance that is hard to get rid of and keeps interfering with normal living. There is no paranoia in the use of the term here].
