On Whether Confusion Emerges between Heh and Chet
Here is He in the square script הההה Here is H.et in the same four fonts in the same order. The one on the extreme left is the closest to formal script of the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D. חחחח
Yes, confusion between the two does occur. The difficulty is that it is H.et not He that occurs in the name Yoh.anan. But then again, can we be quite certain that the basis of the allocation of the letters was as simple as finding the letter in the name of the supposed Evangelist? I can’t think of any other basis, but I’m not entirely happy with this explanation. It’s too obvious. I will think about this.
