Translation of Hekhalot Rabbati Now Available

I just wanted to pass on something that a friend of a friend just made me aware of. Morton Smith's translation of a classic Jewish work. The text is introduced as follows in the email:

The original translation was made in the early 1940s from MS New York 8128. In March 1981, Smith was planning a revision based on 'two better manuscripts' (his 17 March 1981 note to the photocopy of the mss.), and, as late as 1982, in a letter to Reb Scholem, he was still in the planning stages.

Cohen, in 1996, edited and published the two volume (E.J. Brill) Reb Smith anthology, Studies in the cult of Yahweh. Unfortunately, Smith's 18 page 1963 paper, Observations on Hekhalot Rabbati, was not included in the set.

Read it here and pay special attention to the description of the divine throne as it provides an excellent context for the symbolism of the Alexandrian throne of St. Mark
