My short answer:
A thoroughly unreliable witness who happened to have access to a lot of lost but very important sources. Epiphanius reminds me of that scene in the Magic Christian where they drop a ton of money into a pool filled with human waste. The money is the great sources, the pool for of human waste is Epiphanius' understanding of those sources, the people who try to jump in to get some treasure are those of us who want to get close to his original witnesses.
