More Reflections on the Nudity in the Johannine Raising of Lazarus Narrative

"[I]t was at the tomb of Lazarus, shortly before his own death and resurrection, that Jesus entered into fierce struggle in the spirit with the power of death, taking one hostage from the jaws of the grave. Unlike the risen Jesus, however, Lazarus "came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face in a cloth" (John 11:44). He had to be untied. When Jesus rose from the dead, he left the grave cloths behind, forever triumphant over death, naked as the newly created Adam. With the raising of Lazarus, however, a battle had begun." [Patrick J. Ryan, Search ResultsWhen I Survey the Wondrous Cross: Scriptural Reflections for Lent, p. 102]
