Narrowing Down the Focus of the Mar Saba 'Controversy'

It all comes down to this - either someone attempted to forge one of the letters of Clement of Alexandria mentioned in the writings of John of Damascus or a fragment of those letters of Clement of Alexandria was discovered by Morton Smith in 1958 in the same monastery as John of Damascus wrote from in the eighth century. There is simply no other realistic possibility here as far as I can see.
