Robbing the Gnostic Myth of Sophia
I have demonstrated how silly Irenaeus' claims are in past posts. First of all, there is the first Catholic commandment that God gave to Irenaeus while sitting in the court of Commodus - let there be four gospels because there are four winds in the world. What does it matter if God took the form of a wicked, bloodthirsty Emperor.
There there is the supernatural conspiracy theory that stands behind the argument that the Catholic Church represents the only truth about Christianity in the world. Irenaeus teaches that any arguments, texts, traditions or ideas that might come into the hearts of men HAVE TO BE understood to be part of a plot established by the Devil to undermine the divine truth.
That's why all other gospels had to be destroyed. They were 'planted' by the Devil to confuse the intelligent.
Yet I have said enough about these things. Scholars generally try to avoid acknowledging how stupid the lines of reasoning in the writings of Irenaeus realy are. They generally put into into their heads that the fourfold gospel have to be accepted because they were always accepted - except of course if you were a godless heretic.
Now instead of employing Irenaeus' explanation for the origins of the 'heresies' - i.e. the Devil simply created demonic pseudo-Christians to tempt the members of the true Church - scholars have learned to recast this understanding in terms which don't completely offend the principles of science (a methodology NT scholars have to imitate if they want to stand alongside the other sciences in the university system).
So it is that we essentially develop the gnostic myth of the fall of Wisdom to suit all heretics (even those like Marcion who did not promote this idea). Now all the individual teachers received an 'idea' into their heads which 'caused them to fall from the preexistent Church' which somehow was born out of a gathering of Jewish fishermen, tax-gatherers and bounty hunters in Antioch.
Does everyone now see how the original belief in the 'Devil boogey-man' is hushed up and exchanged for the reworked Sophia myth? It was modern scholars who are guilty of this robbery. And don't you see? Their spiritual impotence FORCED them to commit this crime. They are so dependent on Irenaeus words that they have to poach even their alternative models to his 'supernatural conspiracy' - pitiable men that they are.
