On the Carelessness of the Reporting of the Church Fathers [Part One]

Here is just one example of how unreliable the information about the heretics that we get from the Church Fathers. As Epiphanius reports about the Carpocratian interpretation of Matthew 5:25 and the line "Agree with thine adversary quickly." Epiphanius tells us that the Carpocratians name the "adversary" Abolus. Yet this is clearly a corruption of the Diabolus of the parallel report in Irenaeus who was one of the world-making angels, whose office it was to conduct the soul to the principal of these angels - i.e. "the judge."
