Eusebius "Secret Mark" Gospel Canons: the Canonical Sections for Mark 8:26–9:45

Eusebius breaks Mark 8:26–11:1 into multiple small sections, often splitting a single scene across canons. Key sections (with §=Eusebian section, canon number after the dot) are:

  • §81 (Canon X): Mark 8:22–26 (healing the blind man at Bethsaida). Treated as Mark‑only (Canon X) with no parallel in the other Gospels.

  • §82 (Canon I): Mark 8:27–29a (Peter’s confession: “You are the Messiah”). In Canon I (all four Gospels) with parallels in Matthew 16:13–17 and Luke 9:18–20.

  • §83 (Canon II): Mark 8:29b–32a (Jesus rebukes Peter, “Get behind me…”). In Canon II (Matt., Mark, Luke) parallel to Matthew 16:21–23 and Luke 9:21–22.

  • §84 (Canon VI): Mark 8:32b–33 (Jesus, “Get behind me, Satan”). In Canon VI (Matt. & Mark) matching Matthew 16:22–23.

  • §85 (Canon II): Mark 8:34–37 (discipleship/cross teaching). In Canon II (Matt., Mark, Luke) parallel to Matthew 16:24–28 and Luke 9:23–27.

The narrative then shifts into chapter 9. Eusebius splits the Transfiguration and related material:

  • §70 (Canon I): Mark 9:1–8 (the prediction and Transfiguration start). Canon I (all Gospels) covering Mark 9:1–8.

  • §71 (Canon II): Mark 9:9 (turning from the mountain). Canon II (Matt., Mark, Luke).

  • §72 (Canon II): Mark 9:10–11 (discussion about Elijah). Canon II (Matt., Mark, Luke).

  • §73 (Canon II): Mark 9:12–17 (Jesus explains Elijah). Canon II (parallel to Mt 17:10–13, Lk 9:43).

  • §74 (Canon II): Mark 9:18–26 (healing the epileptic boy). Canon II (parallel to Mt 17:14–21, Lk 9:37–43).

The next pericope (request of James and John):

  • §75 (Canon X): Mark 9:27–34 (teaching on greatness). Canon X (Mark only), no parallel.

Finally, Mark 9:34–50 (final sayings) is split again:

  • §95 (Canon II): Mark 9:34–37a (“whoever wants to be first…”). Canon II (Matt., Mark, Luke), parallels Mt 18:1–5, Lk 9:46–48.

  • §96 (Canon I): Mark 9:37b (“for whoever is not against us…”). Canon I (all Gospels).

  • §97 (Canon VIII): Mark 9:38–40 (“do not stop him” about the exorcist). Canon VIII (Luke & Mark) parallel to Luke 9:49–50.

  • §98 (Canon I): Mark 9:41 (“whoever gives you a cup…”). Canon I (all Gospels).

  • §99 (Canon II): Mark 9:37–42. (Overlaps previous; Canon II listing covers 9:37–42).

  • §100 (Canon VI): Mark 9:43–47 (“if your hand causes you to sin…”). Canon VI (Matt. & Mark) parallel to Mt 18:8–9.

  • §101 (Canon II): Mark 9:43b–45. Canon II (Matt. & Mark) continuing that saying.

  • §101 (Canon X): Mark 11:1 (Triumphal Entry begins). Canon X (Mark only), no parallel here.

Continuity and gaps: The sequence is not one continuous pericope in Eusebius’s tables. For example, Mark 8:27–30 is split into §§82–83 across Canons I and II, and Mark 9:1–9 is split into §§70–72. Several Mark-only passages (e.g. §§81, 75, 101) appear in the “Mark only” canon, indicating no parallels. The Transfiguration (Mark 9:2–9) is canonized with Matthew and Luke, while the immediately following sayings (Mark 9:27–34) are in Mark-only sections, showing where Eusebius sees unique vs. parallel content
