Origen's Use of Ammonius in Commentary on Matthew [Part Fourteen]

Origen, Commentary on Matthew13.19 (parallel dossier on the “who is greatest?/child” episode: Mark 9:33–37 // Luke 9:46–48; cf. That is an explicit methodological pivot into “other gospels” as a coordinated set. He then proceeds witness-by-witness with formulaic source switches: Μᾶρκος τοίνυν φησὶν… followed by narrative/dictional extraction (“διελέχθησαν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ… τίς… μείζων”; “καθίσας ἐφώνησεν”; “εἴ τις θέλει πρῶτος… πάντων ἔσχατος… πάντων διάκονος”; “λαβὼν παιδίον… ἐναγκαλισάμενος…”). Then a marked shift: κατὰ μέντοι τὸν Λουκᾶν… tracking not just content but Luke’s distinctive framing (διαλογισμὸς εἰσῆλθε; “ἰδὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὸν διαλογισμὸν τῆς καρδίας αὐτῶν… οὐδὲ ἐρωτηθείς”), and then a micro-variant exploitation that functions like cross-unit collation: Luke’s demonstrative escalation τοῦτο τὸ παιδίον (and Origen’s reaction: οὐκ οἶδα εἰ δύναταί τις μὴ τροπολογῆσαι …). The comparison is organized as if the episode is a stable “unit” across witnesses, with Origen moving through parallel pericope content systematically, not casually. However, there is no incipit+terminus (“καὶ τὰ ἑξῆς ἕως…”) bounding for Mark/Luke, and no canon/table numeration; it is a synoptic workbench rather than explicit table-navigation.Moderate–High (7/10). Not “like 12.15” in the sense of a boundary crisis or seam-management; instead it shows programmatic synoptic collation of a single episode as a comparable unit, with Origen making dictional and demonstrative-level variants do interpretive work. That is strongly compatible with Ammonian-style unit thinking (episodes as alignable blocks), but it does not by itself display the mechanics of Ammonius (no explicit unit boundaries/canon markers), so it is a strong witness for the habit, weaker for direct table-use.
