What Tertullian actually attributes to Marcion

Explicit claims, unassigned quotations, and the possibility that an inherited anti-Marcionite argument became a later catalogue of Marcion’s readings.

The principal result

The automatic equation “Tertullian quotes it = Marcion’s canon contained those exact words” fails. Tertullian quotes his own Matthew, supplies material he expressly says Marcion removed, uses Acts against people who reject Acts, and abbreviates quotations without consistently marking those abbreviations as variants. His exposition is a polemical argument containing textual reports; it is not a continuous diplomatic transcription.

The more specific source hypothesis is promising. In several places Tertullian uses a shortened or unusual expression without locally attributing its wording to Marcion, while Epiphanius subsequently describes closely corresponding wording as a deliberate alteration. The best compact cluster is Luke 10:21, 11:42, 12:8, 13:28 and 24:25; Ephesians 5:31 provides a Pauline comparison. These are places to test whether an earlier exegetical dossier was reclassified as evidence about a heretical manuscript.

Irenaeus is a plausible ancestor of parts of the dossier, but the surviving evidence does not demonstrate that every such reclassification was made from Irenaeus. His surviving works supply two concrete controls: the Matthew-based law-fulfilment argument against Marcionites, and the unusual hyperbaton defence of 2 Corinthians 4:4 later found in Tertullian and Adamantius. No surviving Irenaean passage preserves all the relevant short quotations in precisely Tertullian’s form.

The defensible conclusion: the evidence has to be assigned at the level of each sentence and each claim. Correlated testimony can reflect inherited polemic. It cannot simply be counted as several independent inspections of Marcion’s books.

This does not require a blanket accusation against modern scholarship. Critical reconstructions already distinguish evidence of different strengths. The present audit makes the distinction visible and gives priority to the witnesses’ actual attribution language rather than a modern reconstruction’s completed text.

How the evidence is classified

A is a local express assertion about Marcion’s wording, omission, retention, title, or acceptance of a book. Q is an express but conditional, under-delimited, or text-versus-interpretation-ambiguous claim. E is an expressly assigned interpretation or reading by punctuation, without a different lexical text. B is a quotation, paraphrase, or prooftext with no local assertion that this exact wording belongs to Marcion’s manuscript.

These are attribution classes, not authenticity scores. A B quotation may very probably reflect the opponent’s text. An A accusation may be inferred, inaccurate, inherited, or directed against a later form of Marcionism. “Explicit” describes what the witness claims, not whether the claim is historically true.

Tertullian’s declared program matters. At AM 4.6.1–2 he proposes to use what Marcion retained. At AM 5.13.4 he again says that the surviving portions of Romans will expose the editor. Those declarations give many main lemmas contextual attribution, even when the immediate sentence is B. They do not establish that every incidental prooftext, comparative Gospel, gloss, or unquoted verse in a pericope belongs to the opponent’s book.

There is an especially decisive control at AM 5.4.2: Tertullian expressly says he is discussing material Marcion removed. Therefore even a quotation in the main Pauline argument can come from what Tertullian says was absent. At AM 5.9.7 he explicitly produces “our Gospels” to prove Christ’s night birth. At AM 4.40.2 he names Matthew’s silver-and-field narrative as his comparison.

Adamantius supplies the converse control. At GCS p.18.5–10, the Marcionite Megethius expressly proposes to argue ἀπὸ τῶν ὑμετέρων γραφῶν, from your scriptures. A quotation spoken by a Marcionite character consequently need not come from his own canon either.

The 118 in Epiphanius are 78 Gospel scholia and 40 Pauline scholia. They are polemical units, not 118 unique verses, 118 distinct variants, or 118 specimens of independent collation. Some are composite; some repeat a canonical locus; some merely quote an unchanged passage thought damaging to Marcion. A verse quoted in an elenchus, the refutation following a scholion, is not automatically part of that scholion’s allegedly Marcionite lemma.

The Pauline cumulative numbers P1–40 below are an audit convenience. Epiphanius numbers blocks within individual letters. His initial canon-order report and the order of his detailed exposition must also be kept separate. The detailed Pauline scholia begin with Galatians; within Romans they run 2:12–13 → 2:25 → 2:20. Those are properties of the exposition, not a reconstructed order of verses in Marcion’s codex.

The express-notice register contains 33 A entries, 3 Q entries and 1 E entry. Entries include repeated charges, whole-book notices and generic designations; this count is not a total of unique Marcionite readings. The two reference indexes below are supplemental finding aids, not additional independent evidence classes.

Where an argument may have become a textual allegation

The following comparisons test a possible transformation: an older writer’s prooftext or paraphrase → a later writer’s assertion that Marcion deliberately changed the Gospel. The resemblance makes the transformation plausible; it does not identify the intermediary or exclude a genuinely shared variant.

LocusTertullian’s actual moveLater reportPossible transformationAssessment
Luke 10:21AM 4.25.1 has “Lord of heaven” in a short quotation, without Father or earth.G22 expressly says Marcion removed Father and earth, while retaining Father later.B → explicit omission allegation. An abbreviated title could have been treated as a negative apparatus.Moderate: both abbreviation and actual common Gospel wording remain possible.
Luke 11:42AM 4.27.4 uses vocationem, calling, rather than judgment, without an editing accusation.G26 explicitly reports κλῆσιν instead of κρίσιν.B → explicit substitution allegation. The overlap is lexical, not merely thematic.Moderate to strong as a shared-source indicator; the source could itself have reported the genuine variant.
Luke 12:8AM 4.28.4 has confession coram deo, before God; angels are not in that quotation.G30 says Marcion replaced before the angels of God with before God.B → explicit omission/substitution allegation.Moderate: a quotation can omit an intermediate phrase without recording a codex’s omission.
Luke 13:28AM 4.30.5 reasons from the righteous entering and others detineri foris, kept outside.G40 alleges replacement of the patriarchs/prophets with all the righteous and of cast out with kept out.B paraphrase → two explicit textual modifications.Strong diagnostic candidate because the paired generalization and verb both match; dependence on a particular Irenaean work remains unproved.
Luke 24:25AM 4.43.4 quotes all that he said to you, without the prophets in the excerpt.G77 alleges replacement of what the prophets said by what I said to you.B shortened/reshaped quotation → express rewriting claim.Moderate: exact grammatical forms differ and the referent of Tertullian’s singular verb needs care.
Luke 17:12–19 + 4:27AM 4.35.6 grants, even if Jesus prefaced the ten-leper scene with Elisha/Naaman.G48 gives a definite editing/relocation account.Concessive argument → definite placement report.Moderate to low: Tertullian’s concession might itself presuppose the opponent’s actual arrangement.
Ephesians 5:31AM 5.18.9 cites leaving parents and becoming one flesh, skipping cleaving to his wife.P38 explicitly says Marcion cut the wife clause.B excerpt → express omission allegation.Moderate: very plausible abbreviation, but a true omission could also explain it.
1 Corinthians 15:47AM 5.10.9 quotes second Lord; AM 5.10.7 expressly charges last Lord for last Adam at v.45.Adamantius GCS 102 explicitly alleges second man → second Lord at v.47.A nearby explicit allegation may have been extended to a quotation not locally labelled as changed.Moderate: strong contextual inference in Tertullian; the later author could also know the same reading directly.
Luke 7:23AM 4.18.4–8 debates John’s offence and ignorance, without alleging a wording alteration of this verse.G8 says altered/differently understood and as directed to John; the elenchus treats competing referents. An exegetical note may have acquired a textual interpretation.Holl’s apparatus already calls attention to Epiphanius’s confusion. This is not a newly proven case of deliberate fabrication.
Luke 18:35–43AM 4.36.9–14 argues that Jesus endorsed the blind man’s faith in him as Son of David.G51 retains the episode; Adamantius GCS 200–202 expressly reads from their Gospel and reuses the saving-faith argument.A circulating argument receives an explicit book-reading frame.Strong argument overlap; weak proof that the book claim is false. The frame could correctly identify the source.

The strongest surviving Irenaean control: 2 Corinthians 4:4

Irenaeus AH 3.7 preserves a distinctive defence: pause after “God”, and attach “of this age” to the unbelievers rather than to God. AM 5.11.9 uses the same repunctuation strategy against Marcion’s reading. Adamantius, GCS p.112.1–9, explicitly calls the construction καθ’ ὑπέρβατον and supplies the corresponding rearrangement.

This is evidence for an inherited exegetical solution, not a special wording shared by three personally inspected Marcionite manuscripts. The vocabulary can be the same while the interpreters disagree about its construction. It is a controlled example of the literary process the larger hypothesis requires. It supports Irenaean ancestry, direct or mediated, more securely than it proves direct copying by any named later author.

It also checks the 118 comparison: 2 Corinthians 4:4 is not one of Epiphanius’s forty Pauline lemma items. P26 concerns 4:5–6. A discussion of 4:4 in a refutation, another source, or a modern reconstruction must not silently be promoted into a new numbered scholion.

The law-fulfilment argument supplies a second Irenaean control

In Irenaeus AH 4.13, Irenaeus explicitly opposes Marcionite law/Gospel separation through Matthean commands and a mixed Matthew/Luke series. In Irenaeus AH 4.34, he again addresses Marcionites using Matthew 5:17–18 and Romans 3:21. Thus an anti-Marcionite argument could employ Matthew without claiming that the opponent’s Gospel contained Matthew’s text.

Tertullian’s three express omission charges for Matthew 5:17 are stronger than an ordinary unassigned prooftext. But at AM 4.9.15 his reasoning is visible: Jesus’ action fulfils the law; therefore he must have spoken the fulfilment saying; therefore Marcion erased it rather than Catholics inserting it. The charge is express, yet part of its asserted force is exegetical. Adamantius GCS pp.88–90 produces a different confrontation: Marcus says the fulfilment form is Judaizing and supplies the reversed destroy form.

These are distinguishable reports: quotation against an opponent; alleged omission; alleged reversal; alleged Catholic interpolation. They should not be harmonized into a single recovered Gospel text merely because the same verse is involved.

One form crosses doctrinal sides: the rich man

G50 alleges Father was added to the good-master saying and I know replaced you know. Yet Clement, Paedagogus 1.8.72.2, uses a Father form in a defence of the Creator’s goodness. Megethius in Adamantius, GCS p.2, uses a shorter Father form for the opposite argument. At GCS p.92.25–30, the catholic speaker Adamantius quotes τὰς ἐντολὰς οἶδα, I know the commandments, without introducing it as Marcus’s Gospel. Tertullian AM 4.36.7 instead has Praecepta, inquit, scis, you know the commandments, without charging an alteration.

This does not establish where the shared forms originated. It does show that “attested in a heresiological discussion” and “exclusively Marcionite” are different conclusions. The speaker, introduction and literary purpose of the quotation are indispensable.

Where the witnesses do not agree

At AM 4.42.4, Tertullian expressly says Marcion removed the divided/allocated garments. G71 includes the division of the garments. At AM 5.21.1, he says Philemon escaped corruption; Epiphanius’s blanket corruption language, outside the numbered scholia, is less discriminating. The transfiguration comments and the clothing-of-grass passage supply further qualified tensions. These differences prevent treating the later catalogue as a mechanically identical second copy of Tertullian’s evidence.

The opposite control matters too: the omission of Matthew 5:17 is not an example where Epiphanius transforms a merely unassigned Tertullian quotation into an omission charge. Tertullian already makes that charge expressly; Epiphanius’s relevant leper refutation uses Matthew as counterproof without listing a Matthew 5:17 deletion from Luke.

What can be said about reading Irenaeus?

The model worth testing is: an Irenaean or other early anti-Marcionite argument circulated; later writers reused its proof-series; a short quotation, paraphrase or doctrinal construal was sometimes interpreted as a record of the opponent’s precise wording. The source could be a lost anti-Marcionite work, a commentary, a collection of objections and replies, or more than one intermediary.

The surviving evidence supports the possibility and several concrete mechanisms. It does not allow us to watch Epiphanius consult a lost Irenaean page and make a particular mistake. The exact B→A cases above are therefore graded candidates. The hyperbaton and law-fulfilment controls establish an actual Irenaean reservoir; they do not identify the missing link in every case.

The earlier Adamantius/Maximus/Eusebius comparison supplies a separate literary control: dialogue arguments, including opponent speeches and concessions, can be reproduced from earlier material under a new frame. It does not prove that Adamantius copied Eusebius directly, or that all that material originated with Irenaeus. Consequently a staged “read your book” scene deserves evaluation, not automatic dismissal or automatic conversion into independent codex evidence.

AM 4.2.3
A · title
Gospel heading

Marcion assigns his Gospel no named author.

Marcion evangelio, scilicet suo, nullum adscribit auctorem
Outside the 118: Pan. 42.9 and 42.11 introductory discussion.Adamantius, GCS 8–12, disputes the authority/names of the evangelists. This is an explicit report about a heading, not evidence that the document was Mark. Tertullian identifies it with a damaged Luke in his own argument (4.2.4).
AM 4.5.2
A · rejection
Revelation

Marcion rejects John’s Apocalypse.

Apocalypsin eius Marcion respuit
Not an item in the 118.No independent Apocalypse collation in the Alexandrian register.A useful control: citing or discussing a work in an anti-Marcionite treatise does not establish its acceptance by Marcion.
AM 4.5.4
A · selection
Matthew; Mark; John as books

Tertullian contrasts Marcion’s concentration on Luke with leaving the other Gospels aside.

Marcion flagitandus, quod omissis eis Lucae potius institerit
Outside the numbered Gospel scholia.Adamantius, GCS 8–12: one Gospel/four evangelists dispute. This is Tertullian’s account of canonical selection, not an individual reading or proof that every saying with a Matthean parallel is absent.
AM 4.7.1
A · reported opening
Luke 3:1; 4:31

The presentation joins Tiberius’s fifteenth year to Jesus’ descent to Capernaum.

Anno quintodecimo principatus Tiberiani proponit eum descendisse in civitatem Galilaeae Capharnaum
Opening described before G1; not a separate one of the 118.Origen, Comm. John 10.24: deletion of the birth story, with an explicitly conjectural explanation; Adamantius, GCS 102.20–25: Tiberius/Capernaum.The words “of course from the Creator’s heaven” are Tertullian’s inference. Do not silently insert “from heaven” into the quoted Gospel.
AM 4.7.4
A · omission
Matthew 5:17

Marcion erased the law-and-prophets fulfilment saying, treating it as an addition.

Hoc enim Marcion ut additum erasit
No numbered scholion for Matthew 5:17. It occurs in Epiphanius’s leper refutation, not as a Luke-omission lemma.Adamantius, GCS 88.30–90.1, instead stages a reversed saying and a Judaizing interpolation charge. The allegation is explicit; which physical Gospel location it concerns is not specified here. Compare Irenaeus AH 4.34.1–2 and 4.13.1.
AM 4.9.15
A · omission repeated
Matthew 5:17

The fulfilment saying was erased by the opponent, not inserted by Tertullian’s side.

te potius vocem domini de evangelio eradicasse quam nostros iniecisse
G1’s refutation uses the same fulfilment argument; it does not itself charge removal of Matthew 5:17 from Luke.Adamantius, GCS 88–90, uses the same controversy with different wording claims.Tertullian reasons from Jesus’ action to what he must have said. An explicit charge can itself have an inferential basis.
AM 4.10.8
A · accepted designation
Luke 5:24 / “Son of Man”

Marcion admits the designation Son of Man.

Qua igitur ratione admittas filium hominis, Marcion
G2: the Son of Man’s authority to forgive sins.Adamantius, GCS 200–202, argues from Son of David and the blind man’s faith. An explicit admission of a designation, not a transcription of every word in Luke 5:24. Repeated generically at 5.10.9.
AM 4.12.14
A · omission repeated
Matthew 5:17

Tertullian again says Marcion has silenced the fulfilment saying.

si Marcion hac voce os ei obstruxit
No distinct scholion for this saying.Compare the law-fulfilment controversy in Adamantius, GCS 88–96.A repeat of the same allegation, not a third independent textual witness.
AM 4.17.6
A · omission
Matthew 5:45 in the Luke 6 discussion

Marcion removed the sun and rain associated with the Father’s beneficence.

Euge, Marcion, satis ingeniose detraxisti illi pluvias et soles
No numbered scholion for the sun/rain omission.Irenaeus AH 4.13.3 combines Luke 6 commands with Matthew 5:45 against the law/Gospel separation.Explicit deletion charge; the claim does not tell us whether the base was harmonized Luke, another Gospel, or a polemical dossier. At 4.36.3 Tertullian himself cites sun/rain.
AM 4.22.16
Q · presentation / interpretation
Luke 9:30–31

Marcion would have Moses standing with Jesus rather than conversing with him.

Marcion noluit eum colloquentem domino ostensum, sed stantem
G17 expressly retains two men talking with Jesus, Elijah and Moses, in glory. No separately verified Alexandrian manuscript report of this precise difference. The local statement is express, but it is unclear whether Tertullian reports altered wording or rejects an interpretation. Epiphanius’s wording prevents treating the witnesses as mechanically identical.
AM 4.25.14
A · omission
Luke 10:25

The heretical Gospel has “life” without “eternal” in the lawyer’s question.

In haeretico vita solummodo posita est, sine aeternae mentione
G23 cites the law-question and answer, not the wording of this adjective. No independent exact parallel in the named Alexandrian register. At 4.25.18 Tertullian entertains the opposite hypothesis rhetorically. That concession is not a confession that Catholics added the word.
AM 4.29.13
A · replacement
Luke 12:51 / Matthew 10:34

Tertullian alleges an emendation from “sword” to “division”.

Machaeram quidem scriptum est. Sed Marcion emendat
No numbered scholion for this difference. No exact textual report in the named Alexandrian register. An explicit charge comparing forms now found in different Synoptics; it is not proof that every Matthean parallel was in Marcion’s book.
AM 4.42.4
A · omission
Luke 23:34b / division of garments

Marcion removed the division and allocation of Jesus’ garments.

Vestitum plane eius a militibus divisum, partim sorte concessum, Marcion abstulit
G71 includes the division of the garments. This is a reported disagreement. No independent Alexandrian collation settling the disagreement.Distinguish division from casting lots when delimiting the omission; at minimum Epiphanius retains a division motif which Tertullian’s charge appears to remove.
AM 4.43.7
A · retention + exegesis
Luke 24:39

Marcion retained an inconvenient resurrection saying and read it differently.

eradere de evangelio suo noluit
G78 likewise retains a hands/feet/bones saying without “flesh” in its quotation.Later catena resurrection comments formerly assigned to Origen are not secure early Origen witnesses. The explicit charge here is retention plus interpretation. Tertullian does not explicitly say that Marcion deleted the single word “flesh”.
AM 5.3.3
Q · corruption charge
Galatians 2:4–5

Tertullian alleges scriptural corruption while arguing that Paul did yield temporarily.

apparebit vitiatio scripturae
No corresponding one of the 40 Pauline scholia. No exact counterpart in the Alexandrian register. The printed quotation has “nec ad horam”; the argument requires yielding. The charge is explicit, but the precise reconstructed operation must not be settled by the charge alone.
AM 5.3.11
A · omission
Galatians 3:6–9, compared with 3:26

The retained “children of faith” exposes an erased reference to Abraham.

ostenditur quid supra haeretica industria eraserit, mentionem scilicet Abrahae
P1–2 discuss Galatians 3 and Abraham material but do not independently report this same deletion range.Clement Strom. 5.1.4 argues about Abraham and faith against Marcion, without a manuscript report. The charge explicitly reconstructs an omission from an allegedly retained expression. Its exact verse boundaries are editorial identifications.
AM 5.4.2
A · omission
Galatians 3:16 and the promise argument

Marcion’s “sponge” removed the Abraham/seed promise material under discussion.

Erubescat spongia Marcionis! ... retracto quae abstulit
No distinct scholion reproducing this charge.Clement’s Abraham discussion supplies a theological comparison, not this deletion.Tertullian explicitly says he is now discussing removed material. Thus even his principal Pauline exposition contains quotations offered from material he says was absent.
AM 5.4.8
A · retention + alteration
Galatians 4:22–26, 31

Marcion left the last mention of Abraham, although he changed part of it.

Marcionem novissimam Abrahae mentionem dereliquisse ... etsi ex parte convertit
P2 has Galatians 4:23. It does not independently confirm every clause of Tertullian’s long composite exhibition. The contrast of two dispensations is widespread polemic; no secure exact Alexandrian collation here. The long exhibition includes language resembling Ephesians 1:21 and ecclesial language. The attribution does not mark every word’s source or the exact extent of the alteration.
AM 5.5.9
A · retention
1 Corinthians 10:4

Marcion retains “the rock was Christ”.

Petra autem fuit Christus: etiam Marcion servat
P17 cites the wilderness/rock complex at 1 Corinthians 10.Adamantius, GCS 94–96, develops the same retained-law-testimony strategy. An unusually clear local retention notice, even though Tertullian anticipates a later Pauline passage while discussing 1 Corinthians 1.
AM 5.6.7
A · shared instrument
Luke 4:34

The evil spirit’s recognition of Jesus belongs to the common textual instrument.

secundum commune instrumentum spiritus nequam sciebat eum sanctum dei esse
The opening Capernaum discussion stands outside G1–78.Adamantius also argues from hostile spirits’ knowledge of Christ.“Common instrument” is explicit shared-text language. It does not independently attest every detail of the temptation or Judas notices mentioned nearby “according to ours”.
AM 5.10.7
A · replacement
1 Corinthians 15:45

“Last Lord” replaces “last Adam”.

dominum enim posuit novissimum pro novissimo Adam
P24’s composite resurrection lemma does not include verses 45–47.Adamantius, GCS 100.1–10, puts “last Lord” in Marcus’s quotation; GCS 102 makes an express change allegation at verse 47.Do not transfer this explicit allegation from verse 45 to verse 47 without identifying that transfer as an inference.
AM 5.10.9
A · accepted designation
Gospel “Son of Man”

Marcion employs Christ as Son of Man in the Gospel.

si in evangelio filium hominis adhibet Christum
G2, G3, G16, G20, G49 and G76 contain this designation.Adamantius’s blind-man argument explicitly cites their Gospel at GCS 200–202.This explicit Gospel designation occurs beside a less explicitly attributed Pauline quotation, “second Lord from heaven”. Keep their evidential statuses distinct.
AM 5.11.9
E · punctuation / exegesis
2 Corinthians 4:4

Marcion takes “god of this age” as a designation of the Creator.

Hanc Marcion captavit sic legendo: In quibus deus aevi huius
Not a Pauline scholion in its own right; P26 is 2 Corinthians 4:5–6.Irenaeus AH 3.7.1 and Adamantius GCS 112 use the same hyperbaton/repunctuation defence. An explicit reading/interpretation attribution, not a change of vocabulary. This is the best surviving Irenaean control for inherited exegesis.
AM 5.11.12
A · title repeated
Ephesians / Laodiceans

The heretics label as Laodiceans the letter Tertullian calls Ephesians.

quam nos ad Ephesios praescriptam habemus, haeretici vero ad Laodicenos
P36–38 are under Ephesians; P40 is separately under Laodiceans, though it quotes Ephesians 4:5–6.Adamantius GCS 96 calls the Ephesians 2 passage Ephesians. The title notice itself gives one epistle with rival labels. It cannot alone establish two different epistles.
AM 5.13.4
A · retained block
Romans 2:12–16 and subsequent argument

Tertullian expressly says he is using material Marcion failed to erase.

Mihi sufficit, quae proinde eradenda non vidit
P28–30 contain Romans 2:12–13, 2:25, 2:20, in that order.Origen Comm. Romans 2.13.27 argues against Marcion from circumcision and the law. This is strong contextual evidence for retained Romans material. It is not a word-for-word collation of every ensuing quotation, or a specified list of all missing blocks.
AM 5.14.6
A · unspecified excised block
Romans, before the return to Romans 10:2–4

Tertullian jumps a large gap in the mutilated text before resuming with Israel’s zeal.

Salio et hic amplissimum abruptum intercisae scripturae
No numbered scholion that fixes the boundaries of this gap.Origen’s separate ending/doxology report concerns a different place in Romans. An explicit damaged-text description, but not a verse-bounded catalogue. Do not turn it into a certain deletion of every verse between the last and next quotation.
AM 5.14.9
Q · conditional omission
Romans 9–11 context; Romans 11:33

If Marcion deliberately erased the preceding scriptural argument, his apostle’s exclamation has lost its foundation.

Haec si Marcion de industria erasit, quid apostolus eius exclamat
No Romans 11:33 or doxology scholion among the 40.Origen Comm. Romans 10.43 makes a different and much more definite report about the ending after Romans 14:23 and the doxology.Retain the conditional “if”. Do not convert “haec” into a complete, certain deletion of Romans 9–11, or confuse this passage with Romans 16:25–27.
AM 5.15.1
A · addition
1 Thessalonians 2:15

The heretic added “their own” to “prophets”.

licet suos adiectio sit haeretici
No Thessalonian scholion among the 40, although Epiphanius lists both epistles outside them.No independent exact report in the Alexandrian register. An explicit lexical addition charge, absent from Epiphanius’s numbered comparison set.
AM 5.16.1
A · omission
2 Thessalonians 1:7–8

The heretic erased the flame/fire accompanying the revelation of Jesus.

flammam et ignem delendo haereticus extinxit
No corresponding Thessalonian scholion. No independent exact report in the Alexandrian register.Separate the expressly deleted fire from the nearby retained judgment and vengeance language.
AM 5.17.1
A · title
Ephesians / Laodiceans

Tertullian accuses Marcion of altering the Ephesians title to Laodiceans.

Marcion ei titulum aliquando interpolare gestiit
P40 separately labels an Ephesians 4 excerpt Laodiceans.Adamantius GCS 96 uses Ephesians as the title. An explicit alternate-title claim; splitting that claim into two canonical documents would go beyond Tertullian.
AM 5.17.14
A · omission
Ephesians 2:14–15

Marcion removed “his” from “in his flesh”.

Sed Marcion abstulit Sua
P36 includes Ephesians 2:11–14; it is not a separate independent charge about this exact pronoun at verse 15.Adamantius GCS 96 quotes Ephesians 2:11–13 as retained testimony. The precise alteration is explicit; do not treat the whole Pauline passage as deleted.
AM 5.17.16
A · omission
Ephesians 2:20

The heretic removed “and prophets” from the foundation saying.

Abstulit haereticus, Et prophetarum
No distinct numbered scholion for Ephesians 2:20.No independent precise collation in the Alexandrian list.Contrast 4.39.6: Tertullian himself quotes “foundation of apostles” without explicitly reporting a deletion there. The later express notice adds evidence that abbreviation alone lacks.
AM 5.18.1
A · omission / resulting construction
Ephesians 3:9

Removing “in” changes a mystery hidden in God into one hidden from God.

Rapuit haereticus In praepositionem
No corresponding numbered scholion. No independent exact Alexandrian collation in the present list. The Latin is “occulti ab aevis deo”, not an expressly substituted phrase “a deo”. Report the removal of in, not an invented prepositional replacement.
AM 5.18.11
A · omission
Ephesians 6:2

Marcion removed the notice that this is the first commandment with promise.

etsi Marcion abstulit, Hoc est enim primum in promissione praeceptum
No corresponding numbered scholion. No exact independent Alexandrian report in this register. The remaining parental commands are then used as counterevidence. Do not reconstruct all of Ephesians 6 as absent.
AM 5.19.5
A · omission
Colossians 1:16 and surrounding creation language

Marcion removed the creation-in-Christ material which Tertullian has just rehearsed.

ex illis quae Marcion detraxit, conditis in Christo, in caelis et in terris
P39 is Colossians 2:16–17; it does not independently corroborate this Colossians 1 deletion.Clement Strom. 4.8.66 cites Colossians 3 against Marcion, without attributing its exact text to his copy. The charge is express; the exact extent across verses 15–17 is not bounded by verse numbers in Tertullian.
AM 5.21.1
A · intact epistle
Philemon

Philemon escaped Marcion’s falsifying hands because of its brevity.

Soli huic epistulae brevitas sua profuit ut falsarias manus Marcionis evaderet
No Philemon scholion. Epiphanius’s blanket corruption language belongs outside the 118.No independent Philemon collation in the Alexandrian register. An explicit whole-document statement. A blanket claim elsewhere that every letter was mutilated conflicts with it unless qualified.
AM 5.21.1
A · rejection
1 Timothy; 2 Timothy; Titus

Marcion rejects the two letters to Timothy and the letter to Titus.

ad Timotheum duas et unam ad Titum ... recusaverit
Outside the 118; not part of the ten-letter exposition.Pamphilus’s defence of Origen discusses accusations about Pauline-letter rejection; that is not an independent copy of Marcion’s Apostolikon.Their citation in an anti-heretical argument cannot be turned into acceptance in Marcion’s canon.

Register B: unassigned readings and diagnostic controls

This register isolates readings that matter for reconstruction or source dependence. The full chapter ledger and editorial reference finding aid below cover the remaining context. B means no local exact-word attribution; express context elsewhere is noted rather than suppressed.

AM 4.7.5Matthew 15:24, 26

Lost sheep of Israel; children’s bread and dogs.

No numbered scholion. No exact independent collation here.“Remove also” is a rhetorical imperative, not a plain statement that Tertullian has located these two sayings in Marcion’s manuscript.
AM 4.9.9Luke 5:14

A testimony “to you” (vobis).

G1 expressly alleges “to you” instead of “to them”.Irenaeus AH 4.34.1–2 supplies the related law-fulfilment polemic, not this exact pronoun allegation.Tertullian uses the form and reports Marcion’s defence of the command, but does not locally say Marcion changed the pronoun. A candidate transition from an excerpt to a variant report.
AM 4.14.1Luke 6:20 / Matthew 5:3 parallel

Blessed are the poor/beggars; theirs is God’s kingdom.

G5 stops at the beginning of Jesus’ speech, before this beatitude’s predicate. It is not an independently numbered Mt 5:3 reading.Clement QDS 16.3; 17.5; 19.2 discusses poor in spirit, without naming Marcion or claiming a variant in his Gospel. The larger exposition presents this as Christ’s teaching in the disputed Gospel; there is no local lexical-change claim. B is not a judgment of absence.
AM 4.17.11Luke 6:43–45

Good/bad trees and treasures; applied to truth, heresy, Cerdo, Marcion, Apelles.

No separate tree/treasure Gospel scholion among G1–78.Clement QDS 17.2 has good/bad treasures, not an express tree quotation there. Adamantius GCS 56–60 has the tree/treasure polemic. An explicitly anti-Marcionite interpretation is not an allegation of a distinctive Gospel wording; it does not establish a lost Gospel sequence connecting the trees and beatitudes.
AM 4.18.4Luke 7:20–23

John’s question/offence is discussed as a dispute over Christ’s identity.

G8 calls the saying altered or differently taken “as directed to John”.Adamantius GCS 50–52 stages the same objection; its catholic answer also quotes the beatitude.Tertullian’s discussion does not allege a verbal alteration of Luke 7:23. Epiphanius’s note may have converted or misunderstood a note about interpretation.
AM 4.19.6Matthew 12:48 / Mark 3:33 alongside Luke 8:19–21

Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?

G12 distinguishes narratorial “his mother” from reported “your mother”.Adamantius also contains incarnation polemic; this alone does not assign one Gospel’s wording to Marcion.Tertullian assigns the argument to heretics generally. Synoptic identification of a parallel does not mean he names Matthew or Mark as Marcion’s book.
AM 4.25.1Luke 10:21

“Lord of heaven”, with Father and earth absent from the abbreviated quotation.

G22 expressly says Marcion lacks “Father” and “and earth”, yet later retains “Father”.No independent Alexandrian collation of those precise omissions in the present register. One of the clearest B→A candidates: an unlabelled short quotation could be read as a deliberate excision. Actual shared textual ancestry remains an alternative.
AM 4.25.10Luke 10:22

No one knows Father/Son except the other and the one to whom the Son reveals.

Not G22’s lemma: G22 concerns Luke 10:21.Irenaeus AH 4.6 develops knowledge-of-the-Father polemic; Origen discusses the saying extensively.A major anti-heretical prooftext, but Tertullian does not here specify a word removed or substituted by Marcion. Do not attach Epiphanius’s v.21 omission charge to v.22.
AM 4.26.4Luke 11:2–4

Father; request for Holy Spirit; kingdom; daily bread; forgiveness.

G24 starts at Luke 11:5, not at the Lord’s Prayer.Origen Luke fragment: old no.46 = Rauer 1959 no.180 expressly reports Marcion’s “your bread”.Tertullian asks who gives daily bread; he does not quote the possessive “your”. He cannot independently confirm Origen’s exact variant here.
AM 4.27.4Luke 11:42

“Calling” and love of God (vocationem ... et dilectionem).

G26 expressly alleges “calling” instead of “judgment”.No independent exact Alexandrian report in the list.Tertullian’s unmarked wording becomes an explicit variant allegation in Epiphanius. This is an excellent candidate for a dossier-derived reading, without proving the route.
AM 4.28.4Luke 12:8–9

Confession/denial “before God”, without the angels in the quotation.

G30 expressly alleges “before God” for “before God’s angels”.No exact independent Alexandrian collation in the register.Another candidate B→A upgrade: abbreviation or inherited wording may have acquired an excision explanation.
AM 4.29.1Luke 12:27–28

Grass and lilies clothed by God; Solomon less splendid.

G31 says Marcion does not have God clothing the grass. No independent exact Alexandrian collation here.Tertullian uses the motif positively. This is tension between a B argument and Epiphanius’s A omission claim, not automatically proof that either author saw a different manuscript.
AM 4.30.5Luke 13:28

The righteous entering God’s kingdom; others kept outside.

G40 alleges substitution of all the righteous for Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the prophets, and “kept out” for “cast out”.No independently collated Alexandrian copy for this wording.Tertullian paraphrases the scene while arguing about judgment; Epiphanius treats closely matching wording as deliberate rewriting. This is the strongest compact example of the user’s proposed mechanism.
AM 4.33.4Luke 16:12

“Who will give you what is mine?” (meum).

No distinct scholion for this word.Adamantius GCS 52–56 uses ownership/redemption argumentation, not an independent collation of this possessive.A potentially significant textual form which Tertullian does not locally identify as Marcion’s substitution.
AM 4.34.6Matthew 5:32

Divorce exception expressly quoted as Matthew’s Gospel.

No numbered scholion for the Matthean divorce exception.Irenaeus AH 4.13 combines Matthew and Luke in law-fulfilment polemic.Tertullian explicitly draws on Matthew as a comparison/prooftext. Treating every Gospel quotation in Book IV as a Marcionite lemma fails this control.
AM 4.35.6Luke 4:27 inside discussion of Luke 17:12–19

Elisha and Naaman compared with the ten lepers.

G48 says Marcion transferred the Elisha/Naaman saying here.No exact independent Alexandrian collation in this register.Tertullian’s “even if he prefaced it” is concessive. Epiphanius supplies a definite placement claim; this could reflect a shared source or an inference hardened into textual reportage.
AM 4.36.3Matthew 5:45

Sun and rain given to good and bad.

No numbered scholion for this saying.Irenaeus AH 4.13.3 uses the same beneficence proof. This is Tertullian’s own prooftext after his express claim at 4.17.6 that Marcion removed sun/rain. Presence in Tertullian cannot equal presence in Marcion at both locations.
AM 4.36.4Luke 18:18–21

Good master; commands; “you know” (scis at 4.36.7).

G50 adds Father and changes “you know” to “I know”. Tertullian does not allege either alteration.Clement Paed. 1.8.72.2 has “my Father in heaven”; QDS 4 has the commands. Adamantius GCS 92 has “I know” in the catholic speaker’s quotation. The supposedly diagnostic forms cross speaker and doctrinal boundaries. Shared form alone cannot establish Marcionite provenance.
AM 4.36.9Luke 18:35–43

Blind man calls Jesus Son of David; his faith saves him.

G51 retains the same narrative and argument.Adamantius GCS 200.20–202 expressly reads from “their Gospel” and argues from the blind man’s saving faith.Later explicit attribution may preserve an older argument rather than a new inspection; here the wording also has strong contextual support. No surviving Irenaean exact exemplar proves the chain.
AM 4.40.2Matthew 27:3–10

Judas’s returned silver and purchase of the potter’s field, expressly “as in Matthew”.

No numbered Marcion scholion for the silver/field narrative. No independent Marcionite manuscript report in the Alexandrian register.A decisive own-source control: Tertullian identifies his comparison as Matthew. It does not show that Marcion’s Gospel contained the episode.
AM 4.40.3Luke 22:19–20

Bread/body and cup/blood; Tertullian’s “figure of my body” explanation.

G62 is the Passover introduction (22:14–15); G63 alleges omission of 22:16. Neither is a numbered lemma for the entire institution text.Adamantius contains sacramental/Christological argument, without a new collation established here.“That is, a figure of my body” is Tertullian’s gloss. It must not be inserted into a reconstructed Marcionite Gospel.
AM 4.43.6Luke 24:39

Spirit has no bones, as you see me having.

G78 similarly omits flesh in the quotation; its elenchus is distinct. The alleged Origen catena parallels require attribution checks; some are later writers. The nearby explicit retention notice is strong evidence for the saying. Absence of flesh from a quotation alone does not become an explicit charge that Marcion cut that word.
AM 4.43.4Luke 24:25

Slow to believe “all that he said to you”, with no prophets in the excerpt.

G77 explicitly charges replacement of the prophets reference by “what I said to you”.No independent exact Alexandrian collation of this clause in the register.Tertullian’s abbreviated/reshaped citation could be treated as a Gospel variant by a later cataloguer. He does not locally allege a Marcionite replacement; the subject of locutus is itself part of the ambiguity.
AM 5.1.3Galatians 1:1

Apostle not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ.

No corresponding Pauline scholion.Jerome later makes a specific Father-omission charge; it is a separate witness, not Tertullian’s own express allegation. The truncated quotation does not locally say that Marcion deleted “and God the Father”. The opponent’s use of the verse and the alleged omission are different claims.
AM 5.2.7Acts 15; compare Acts 16 and 21 at 5.3.5

Jerusalem consultation and apostolic decree invoked as corroboration of Paul.

Not part of the 118; Acts is not one of Epiphanius’s ten Pauline letters.Eusebius often reports earlier authors and histories; historical citation is not a Marcionite book inventory.Tertullian expressly asks why his opponents reject Acts. These citations are his counterevidence, not a Marcionite canonical book.
AM 5.4.2Galatians 4:4

Time fulfilled; God sent his Son, without quoting the woman/under-law clauses.

No separate Galatians 4:4 scholion among the 40.Origen’s report about a Gospel birth narrative is not a separate report of the exact Pauline clauses. The excerpt is short. The explicit “sponge” charge immediately before it concerns the Abraham promise; it must not automatically be extended to make the omitted woman clause an explicit Tertullian allegation.
AM 5.7.31 Corinthians 5:7

Christ our Passover; unleavened dough.

P13 has the Passover saying.Adamantius GCS 98–100 argues from Christ our Passover.Tertullian uses the lemma without a local “Marcion reads” formula; later readers explicitly catalogue its survival. Plausible shared dossier, not a demonstrated false attribution.
AM 5.8.111 Corinthians 14:34

Women’s silence/subjection supported from the law.

P23 expressly retains it; P21–22 also catalogue the law/languages cluster.Adamantius GCS 96.5–15 expressly introduces it as a remnant Marcion left. This is a clear later amplification of the retained-remnants strategy. It may be correct; the parallel does not independently prove personal manuscript inspection.
AM 5.9.7Matthew 2:1–12; Luke 2:7–11

Magi, star, angel and shepherds establish a night birth.

No scholion retaining the birth story; Epiphanius says Marcion omits it in his preliminary account.Origen Comm. John 10.24 reports removal of the birth account.Tertullian expressly says “we produce Gospels” (nos edimus evangelia). A prooftext from his own canon appears in the middle of Book V’s Pauline exposition.
AM 5.10.91 Corinthians 15:47

First man earthy; second Lord from heaven.

P24’s resurrection lemma does not include verse 47.Adamantius GCS 102.3–9 explicitly charges “second man” → “second Lord”.A strong contextual Marcionite inference, but the explicit word-substitution charge in Tertullian is at verse 45, not repeated at 47. Adamantius could have extended that charge; actual variant knowledge is also possible.
AM 5.10.111 Corinthians 15:49–50

Let us bear, not we shall bear; flesh and blood cannot inherit.

P24 is not an independent lemma for verses 49–50.Clement Strom. 4.7.45 discusses flesh and the kingdom; Irenaeus AH 5.9 gives the ethical interpretation.Tertullian explicitly contrasts two grammatical forms, but does not here label the rejected future as Marcion’s reading. A textual discussion is not automatically a Marcionite variant notice.
AM 5.10.161 Corinthians 15:54–55

Written word against death fulfilled; victory/sting.

P24 includes these verses, within a composite, nonconsecutive lemma.Adamantius GCS 96 expressly quotes the scriptural formula as a retained remnant.A candidate older catholic proof-series later framed as a remnant inventory. The item can be inherited and genuinely Marcionite; the categories are not mutually exclusive.
AM 5.11.112 Corinthians 4:6

God who said let light shine shines in Christ.

P26 cites 4:5–6.Adamantius GCS 102.10–25 uses the same creation/light counterargument.Tertullian’s local wording is an argument from a verse, not an explicit separate collation. The adjoining v.4 dispute is about construal, not a newly different text.
AM 5.12.92 Corinthians 13:1

Every matter established by two or three witnesses.

No distinct scholion for 13:1 among the 40.Adamantius GCS 96 expressly places it in his series of surviving remnants.A useful B→later-A framing comparison without proof of a wrong reading or of the identity of the intermediary.
AM 5.13.7Romans 2:24–29

Law, Jewish identity and circumcision of the heart.

P29 is Romans 2:25; P30 returns to 2:20.Origen Comm. Romans 2.13.27 argues against Marcion from 2:25.No new local variant charge, but 5.13.4 gives a retained-block declaration. Treat as contextually supported, not wholly unattributed or necessarily copied from Irenaeus.
AM 5.17.12Ephesians 2:11–13

Gentiles once alien, now near in Christ’s blood.

P36 has 2:11–14.Adamantius GCS 96.24–30 explicitly presents the passage as retained.Shared polemical selection is consistent with a dossier; it does not by itself establish which witness copied which.
AM 5.18.9Ephesians 5:31–32

Leaving parents and becoming one flesh; wife-joining clause absent from the excerpt.

P38 expressly alleges removal of “and shall cleave to his wife”.No separately verified Alexandrian manuscript collation of this precise omission. An excellent abbreviation→omission candidate. Tertullian’s whole surrounding argument supports marriage; a short quotation alone cannot identify deliberate excision.
AM 5.19.4John 1:3

All things made through the Word; nothing without him.

No John scholion among the 78 Gospel items.Origen and Eusebius also use catholic Johannine creation theology in anti-heretical arguments.Tertullian’s theological comparison within a Colossians discussion is not an assertion that Marcion accepted John’s Gospel.
AM 5.19.9Colossians 2:16–17

Food, drink, festival, new moon, Sabbath: shadow and body.

P39 retains this complex.Clement Strom. 4.8.66 uses Colossians 3, a different passage, against Marcion.Same letter is not same reading. The Clement passage does not independently attest Epiphanius’s exact Colossians 2 text.
AM 5.20.3Philippians 2:6–8

Form/likeness of God, servant and humanity used for docetism.

No Philippian scholion among the 40, despite the letter’s presence in Epiphanius’s canon list.Later Christological disputes use the same passage; no new Marcionite manuscript is established by that fact.Tertullian expressly reports a Marcionite interpretation, not an alteration of the quoted vocabulary.

The complete 118-item comparison

G1–78 follow the Gospel scholia in Panarion 42.11. P1–40 give a cumulative count of the Pauline scholia in 42.12, retaining each letter’s local number. “Partial” or “same chapter only” is not positive attestation of the precise verse. “No matching report” means none established in Tertullian’s compared exposition, not proof that Marcion lacked the passage.

The Gospel table preserves Epiphanius’s disorder: G21 returns to Luke 6; G52 follows the blind man despite preceding him in Luke; G55 follows the arrest notice despite coming before it; G56–57 duplicate the bush passage.

G65Luke 22:41Withdrawal, kneeling and prayerAM 4.41.1No exact local treatmentNo independent textual report from the shared passion frame.
G66Luke 22:47–48Judas approaches to kissAM 4.41.2B same passagePassion analysis without a local precise alteration allegation.
G67Luke 22:50–51Ear-cutting episode excisedAM 4.41.3No matching ear episodeNo express local omission charge established by the selective passion discussion.
G68Luke 22:63–64Mockery and who-struck-you challengeAM 4.41.4Partial passion overlapAn overlapping trial sequence cannot attest every detail.
G69Luke 23:2Accusation adds destroying law and prophetsAM 4.42.1No local addition allegationEpiphanius’s addition cannot be independently derived from Tertullian’s trial summary.
G70Luke 23:2Accusation adds turning wives/children awayAM 4.42.1No local addition allegationThis is Luke 23:2, despite the erroneous Luke 22:47–48 footnote in Williams’s first-list printing.
G71Luke 23:33–34, 44Crucifixion, garments divided, sun darkenedAM 4.42.4A disagreementTertullian expressly says Marcion removed the divided/allocated garments; Epiphanius includes division.
G72Luke 23:43Thief’s paradise promise removedAM 4.42.6No local omission reportTertullian’s silence about the thief does not independently establish deletion.
G73Luke 23:46Loud cry and deathAM 4.42.6B related sayingTertullian quotes commending the spirit to the Father; Epiphanius’s short lemma is not identical in extent.
G74Luke 23:50–53Joseph takes, wraps and buries bodyAM 4.42.7B same bodily-burial argumentAn important common anti-docetic argument, not a locally attributed spelling or wording change.
G75Luke 23:56Women rest on Sabbath according to lawAM 4.43.1Related transition onlyTertullian discusses the women’s dawn visit, not an exact independent quotation of Sabbath rest.
G76Luke 24:5–7Angels recall prediction and risingAM 4.43.5B same resurrection complexKeep this quotation’s extent distinct from G77’s alleged change to the prophets reference.
G77Luke 24:25–26, 30–31Prophets replaced by what Jesus said; bread/recognition retainedAM 4.43.4B → A candidateTertullian has “all that he said to you”, without prophets in the excerpt. Epiphanius supplies an explicit replacement allegation; both abbreviation and a genuine shared variant remain possible.
G78Luke 24:38–39Hands/feet/bones; flesh absent in excerptAM 4.43.7A retention + interpretationStrong shared retention, but neither the parallel excerpts nor Tertullian’s explicit claim automatically establish a word-flesh deletion.

The forty Pauline items

These are the forty numbered items, not the full ten-letter canon list. The absence of a Thessalonian, Philippian or Philemon scholion does not mean Epiphanius denies that Marcion had that letter. The separate Laodiceans item quotes material now in Ephesians.

P13
1 Corinthians §5
1 Cor 5:7Christ as Passover sacrifice.AM 5.7.3B same Passover lemmaAdamantius GCS 98–100 shares the Passover proof; later framing need not be a new inspection.
P14
1 Corinthians §6
1 Cor 6:16Union with a prostitute and the two becoming one flesh.AM 4.34.5B related 1 Corinthians 6 argumentTertullian’s clearest use there is members-of-Christ/prostitute (6:15); do not silently equate it with a full quotation of 6:16.
P15
1 Corinthians §7
1 Cor 9:8–9Law/Moses wording, with verses cited out of sequence.AM 5.7.10B same law/ox lemmaP15–16 overlap one another; count scholia, not unique quotations.

1 Corinthians §9
1 Cor 10:1–9, 11Composite wilderness narrative and its application to Christians.AM 5.5.9A explicit rock retention; B wider blockTertullian explicitly says Marcion retains 10:4. That does not explicitly collate every verse in Epiphanius’s larger wilderness lemma.

1 Cor 11:7, 14God’s image/glory and a prohibition on long hair are combined.AM 5.8.1B head/image argumentP19 combines 11:7 and 11:14. Tertullian’s discussion does not separately establish every part of that composite.
P20
1 Corinthians §12
1 Cor 12:24God’s arrangement of the body.AM 5.8.9B body/members argumentA paraphrased argumentative use, not a locally assigned wording change.

1 Cor 14:19Speaking five words; disputed wording concerning the law.AM 5.8.10No matching “law” variant chargeTertullian discusses tongues and the following law citation; do not equate 14:21 with this variant in 14:19.
P22
1 Corinthians §14

P23
1 Corinthians §15
1 Cor 14:34Women’s silence and the law.AM 5.8.11B → later explicit retained-remnant framingAdamantius GCS 96.5–15 expressly assigns this verse to the retained remnants.

P25
2 Corinthians §1
2 Cor 1:20God’s promises and the Amen.AM 5.11.3B promise argumentNo local express alteration allegation.
P26
2 Corinthians §2
2 Cor 4:5–6Preaching Christ and God’s command concerning light.AM 5.11.11B same creation/light proofAdamantius GCS 102 repeats the creation/light argument. The preceding 2 Cor 4:4 hyperbaton is a separate question, not P26’s lemma.
P27
2 Corinthians §3
2 Cor 4:13Spirit of faith; alleged omission of the scriptural citation formula.AM 5.11.14No exact quote/omission allegation establishedTertullian proceeds through nearby 2 Cor 4 material without establishing Epiphanius’s deletion of “as written” at 4:13.
P28
Romans §1
Rom 2:12–13Judgment with/without law; doing the law.AM 5.13.4A retained-block declarationTertullian expressly uses what Marcion failed to erase. Exact verse extent still requires care.
P29
Romans §2
Rom 2:25Circumcision and keeping the law.AM 5.13.7B within an A-retention frameOrigen Comm. Romans 2.13.27 uses 2:25 against Marcion; not an independently collated wording just because it is the same verse.
P30
Romans §3
Rom 2:20bKnowledge and truth in the law; earlier verse placed after 2:25.AM 5.13.6No separate exact quote establishedEpiphanius places 2:20 after 2:25. Preserve that order; Tertullian’s neighbouring law argument does not prove this exact wording.
P31
Romans §4
Rom 5:6Christ’s death for the ungodly.AM 5.13.9Related Romans 5 argument onlyTertullian’s peace/reconciliation argument uses 5:1 and 5:10; it is not an exact independent quotation of Epiphanius’s 5:6 lemma.
P32
Romans §5
Rom 7:12The holiness, justice and goodness of the law.AM 5.13.13B same law defenceClement’s and Origen’s anti-Marcionite law discussions are comparisons of exegesis, not fresh word collations.
P33
Romans §6
Rom 8:4The law’s requirement fulfilled in believers.AM 5.14.2B same Romans 8 argumentClement Strom. 4.7.45 offers a relevant ethical/flesh interpretation; exact reading agreement is not thereby established.
P34
Romans §7
Rom 10:4Christ and the end/fulfilment of the law.AM 5.14.6B same law/Christ argumentTertullian expressly reports a heretical construal at 5.14.7; that does not constitute different vocabulary.
P35
Romans §8
Rom 13:8Love of neighbour as fulfilment of the law.AM 5.14.13B neighbouring fulfilment/love argumentAdamantius GCS 92 quotes Romans 13:8–10 in catholic law-fulfilment exposition.
P36
Ephesians §1
Eph 2:11–14Gentiles, Israel, covenants and reconciliation.AM 5.17.12B alienation/near-in-blood argumentAdamantius GCS 96 expressly presents 2:11–13 as retained. Tertullian’s sua deletion charge is separately at 2:14–15.
P37
Ephesians §2
Eph 5:14The summons to awaken and rise.AM 5.18.6No exact independent text report establishedTertullian’s Ephesians exhortations, including 5:11 nearby, do not by themselves collate 5:14.
P38
Ephesians §3
Eph 5:31The marriage saying and the allegedly missing wife clause.AM 5.18.9B → A omission candidateTertullian’s short quotation lacks “cleave to his wife”; Epiphanius explicitly alleges its excision. Abbreviation remains a live explanation of Tertullian’s wording.
P39
Colossians §1
Col 2:16–17Food, calendar observances, shadow and fulfilment.AM 5.19.9B same shadow/body argumentClement’s Colossians 3 quotation is a different passage and does not supply this reading.
P40
“Laodiceans” §1
Eph 4:5–6One Lord, faith, baptism and God; classified separately by Epiphanius.AM 5.17.1A alternate title; no separate letter establishedP40 quotes Ephesians 4:5–6 under Laodiceans. Tertullian’s title notice describes one letter with rival labels; splitting it into two is a possible dossier-reading error, not proven dependence.

The 78 initial Gospel units were checked against the repeated Greek scholia/refutation structure and Williams’s first list. The online Greek transcription merges or loses some boundaries; those transcription defects were not treated as ancient omissions. Williams’s erroneous reference beneath G70 was kept out of the canonical mapping: the wives/children addition belongs with the accusation at Luke 23:2.

The Alexandrian and related witness list, compared

The earlier Alexandrian register mixed very different kinds of evidence: direct textual claims, named interpretations, conditional arguments, historical reporting and catena fragments. The table preserves those distinctions. A matching verse is not necessarily a matching reading; a matching argument is not necessarily an independent manuscript inspection. Adamantius is included as a related, transmitted dialogue witness rather than assuming that its author was Origen.

Clement, Strom. 3.3.18Romans 7:24: body of deathCounter-exegesis in discussion of Marcion; no different wording attributed.AM 5.13.13–15 (Romans 7)No matching Romans 7:24 lemma. P32 is 7:12.
Clement, Strom. 3.4.25Dead bury dead, addressed to PhilipConditional opponent appeal; Philip is not thereby a collated Marcionite name.AM 4.23 (Luke 9:59–60)No numbered scholion for this saying.
Clement, Strom. 4.7.45Romans 8:7–10, 13, 17–18; flesh, spirit and creationAnti-Marcionite ethical interpretation; not a textual variant report.AM 5.14.1–5; compare 5.10.11–12P33 has Romans 8:4, a related but different locus.
Clement, Strom. 4.8.66Colossians 3:12–15Paul used to shame Marcion; precise presence in his copy unstated.AM 5.19 deals chiefly with Colossians 1–2.P39 is Colossians 2:16–17; no independent overlap with Clement’s actual verses.
Clement, Strom. 5.1.4Abraham, faith and the god who claims the Creator’s peoplePolemical ownership/faith dilemma, not a manuscript reading.AM 5.3.11; 5.4.2, 8; 5.7.5P1–2 include Abraham/Galatians material, without proving exact same words.
Clement, Paed. 1.8.72.2; QDS 4No one good except Father / one God; rich manPaedagogus has my Father in heaven, without naming Marcion. QDS is a separate explicitly Mark-labelled pericope.AM 4.36.3–7: no Father-addition allegation; scis (you know).G50 adds Father and I know. Adamantius GCS 2 has Father in Megethius’s speech; GCS 92 has I know in the catholic quotation.
Clement, QDS 16.3; 17.2, 5; 19.2Poor in spirit; good/bad treasureUnnamed Gospel use/exegesis, not a report about Marcion’s book.AM 4.14.1; 4.17.11–12: poor and trees/treasures.No direct tree/treasure scholion. Same motifs do not establish a lost Gospel’s order.
Origen, Comm. John 5.7Paul’s singular my Gospel; four evangelists, one GospelNamed Marcionite canonical/exegetical argument.AM 4.2–5 and 5.2 discuss Gospel authority, but do not offer a fresh exact-word collation here.Adamantius GCS 10–12 shares the singular/plural argument closely.
Origen, Comm. John 10.24Birth narrative omittedAn omission report with a conjectural motive (“I think”).AM 4.7.1 reports the Capernaum opening; AM 5.9.7 produces birth texts from our Gospels.Epiphanius’s birth-omission discussion is preliminary, outside the 118.
Origen, Luke fragment: old no.46 = Rauer 1959 no.180Luke 11:3: your breadAn explicit Marcionite wording report, stronger than an unassigned allusion.AM 4.26.4 discusses daily bread but does not attest the possessive your.G24 starts at 11:5. Neither Tertullian nor this numbered Epiphanius item independently confirms the exact possessive.
Origen, Comm. Romans 2.13.27Romans 2:25; circumcision/lawExplicit anti-Marcionite interpretation, not a newly different wording.AM 5.13.7, within the retained-block program of 5.13.4.P29 has 2:25; P30 then returns to 2:20. A common text supports divergent interpretations.
Origen, Comm. Romans 10.43Ending after Romans 14:23; doxology 16:25–27Definite mutilation/ending report in Rufinus’s Latin transmission; distinguish from ordinary quotations. No comparable doxology report in AM 5.13–14.No doxology scholion among the 40. This precise report is not independently triply attested by the lists.
Origen, First Principles 2.5.4Good/bad trees and good/bad treasureReport of opponents’ dualist interpretation, followed by a moral answer.AM 4.17.11–12 counters the two-gods interpretation.Adamantius GCS 56–60 has the same debate. No special variant or tree→beatitude Gospel order follows.
Origen, Comm. Matthew 15.3Matthew 19:12 eunuchsConditional inference about what Marcion would reject if consistent.AM 4.11.8 discusses Marcion’s baptismal/marriage discipline, not a collated Matthew 19:12 omission. No matching scholion. Do not upgrade a conditional exegesis into an omitted-verse report.
Origen, Contra Celsum 6.53Good god appropriating another god’s peopleOrigen explicitly refers to an already existing anti-Marcionite argument.Compare AM 5.4.9; 5.7.5 and ownership/redemption dilemmas.Adamantius GCS 52–54 shares the purchase/ownership dispute. This establishes circulation before Origen, not Irenaean authorship by itself.
Origen, Contra Celsum 2.27; 5.62Gospel revision accusations; Marcionite nameCelsus/Origen’s reported controversy, not a catalogue of recoverable variant readings.AM 4.1–6 alleges revision and defines its counterargument. No extra independent verse-specific manuscript collations should be counted.
Origen-labelled Luke Hom. 34; Hom. 39 fragmentsThe words are in their Gospel; resurrection/bush polemicAuthorship controls required: Cyril heading in one transmission; resurrection fragment reassigned to Apollinaris in Cattaneo’s study.Compare AM 4.38.4–9 and the resurrection debate.G56–57 omit the bush text. An insecure catena attribution cannot establish an early Origen contradiction.
Origen, Luke Hom. 25; fragments about Luke’s introductionPaul at the right, Marcion at the left; true/false apostolic traditionInterpretation of authoritative transmission; no specific variant reconstructed from the name alone.AM 4.2–5; 5.1.Not an additional codex witness for the 118.
Origen on Titus, transmitted by Pamphilus/RufinusGod distinction and adult appearanceAn apologetically transmitted excerpt, not a transcribed Gospel incipit.AM 4.7.1; 4.21.11.Preliminary Epiphanius narrative only; do not count it as another exact incipit.
Eusebius, HE 4.11; 4.18; 5.8; compare 4.24–25Marcion/Cerdo; Justin, Theophilus, Philip, Irenaeus and lost anti-Marcionite booksEusebius names and quotes earlier sources. A report of Irenaeus is not an independent fourth-century reading of Marcion’s codex.Provides a plausible literary world for AM’s inherited arguments.Supports source criticism, not a verse-by-verse confirmation of Epiphanius’s book.
Didymus, 1 Corinthians 15:29 catena fragmentBaptism for the deadLater Alexandrian exegesis connected with Marcion; survives through a fragmentary/commented tradition.AM 5.10.1–2 uses 15:29 without a local exact-variant notice.P24’s numbered lemma does not include 15:29. Do not count the resurrection topic as an independent quotation of this verse.
Adamantius, GCS 8–12Colossians 4:10–14; Mark/Luke; one GospelExpress in-dialogue demand for the opponent’s Apostolikon and represented reading.AM 4.2–5: authority and evangelists; AM 5.19 is not an independent Colossians 4 collation. No Colossians 4 scholion in P1–40. The performance of consulting a book is not external proof of the compiler’s access.
Adamantius, GCS 50–60; 76–80John’s question; buying another’s property; trees/treasures; LazarusNamed Marcionite debate and catholic replies. Identify the speaker before assigning any wording.AM 4.18; 4.17; 4.34; 5.4.9.G8 and G44–46 overlap selected arguments. Several other scenes have no corresponding numbered scholion.
Adamantius, GCS 64–68Tiberius; Romans 2:16; judgment chain“I have your Apostolikon” explicitly introduces an argument. Subsequent prooftexts still require separate scope checks.AM 4.7.1; 5.13.4–5; 5.16.P28 relates to Romans 2, but the statement does not certify every later citation’s full wording.
Adamantius, GCS 88–94Matthew 5:17 reversed; Romans 13; rich manReversal is explicitly claimed; the catholic rich-man proof is not introduced as Marcus’s Gospel.AM 4.7.4 instead alleges deletion of fulfilment; AM 4.36; 5.14.13.No Matthew 5:17 lemma; G50’s I know nevertheless appears in the catholic rich-man quotation at GCS 92.
Adamantius, GCS 94–981 Corinthians 10:11 without a type; retained remnantsAn explicit represented reading dispute, followed by a deliberate surviving-remnants catalogue.AM 5.7.14 uses exemplary wording; 5.8.11, 5.12.9, 5.10.16, 5.17.12 have the retained-series prooftexts.P17, P23, P24, P36 overlap. There is no separate P item for 2 Corinthians 13:1.
Adamantius, GCS 100–1021 Corinthians 15:45, 47: last Lord / second LordMarcus’s quotation has both; the explicit alteration charge at GCS 102 concerns second man→second Lord.AM 5.10.7 explicitly charges v.45; 5.10.9 quotes v.47 without repeating a word-change accusation.Neither verse is in the numbered P24 lemma. Any occurrence in a refutation is a different evidential unit.
Adamantius, GCS 1122 Corinthians 4:4; hyperbatonSame special repunctuation defence as Irenaeus AH 3.7.1 and Tertullian AM 5.11.9.Explicitly inherited-looking exegesis, not necessarily three independently inspected books. Not an additional numbered Pauline scholion; P26 is 4:5–6.
Adamantius, GCS 200–202Luke 18:35–43; blind man’s Son of David confessionExpress “from their Gospel” in a later part of the Dialogue.AM 4.36.9–14 uses a closely similar faith/identity argument.G51 retains the scene. Strong comparison for an argument receiving a more explicit source frame; no proven direct copying chain.

The full 64-unit name-search register from the previous Alexandrian study remains a retrieval inventory. Several units are duplicate Greek/Latin versions, biographies, contents headings or later catena attributions. They have not been converted here into sixty-four independent quotations of Marcion’s canon.

Coverage of every chapter in Books IV and V

This chapter ledger prevents a selected-example study from masquerading as an exhaustive verse apparatus. It identifies the main biblical discussion of all 64 chapters. Main narrative blocks are broad scopes: they do not certify each verse. The 37 express/qualified notices above and the 118-item crosswalk supply the finer evidential distinctions.

Supplemental New Testament reference finding aid

This merges 251 expanded Evans index loci with NT chapter references supplied by the Holmes/New Advent presentation, deduplicating repeats within each editorial source. The resulting 770 finding-aid rows are not a count of quotations, variants, or Marcionite readings. Main Pauline chapters are often indexed as broad ranges, while incidental comparisons receive exact references. Every row keeps its editorial provenance.

Some printed locators are erroneous or uncertain. They are flagged rather than silently “corrected” into evidence. In particular the index’s 2 Corinthians 1–4 overview points to Book V chapter 12, whereas the actual exposition is chapter 11; a Matthew 5:5 locator points to a nonexistent section; and the Matthew birth-story locator is displaced. The hand-reviewed registers above take precedence over these index labels.

What the comparison establishes

  1. Textual allegations form a limited, identifiable layer within the larger argument. The express notices include precise word changes, whole-book statements, repeated allegations and open-ended omission claims. They cannot be counted indiscriminately as the same kind of evidence.
  2. A later assertion can be more explicit than its earlier comparator. Luke 10:21, 11:42, 12:8, 13:28, 24:25 and Ephesians 5:31 give concrete tests of the proposed passage from quotation or paraphrase to Marcionite variant attribution.
  3. Some agreements reflect a common polemical problem or solution. The hyperbaton of 2 Corinthians 4:4 is a particularly diagnostic surviving Irenaean example. It establishes inherited-looking exegesis rather than a distinctive vocabulary in a heretical codex.
  4. Some disagreements resist a single mechanically recovered text. The garments, Father/I know forms, transfiguration presentation and Philemon notices must remain visible. Explaining all of them by unspecified manuscript variation is a further hypothesis, not the data itself.
  5. The specific Irenaean-transmission hypothesis is testable but not demonstrated for every item. The data support earlier dossiers and mediated arguments; identifying a particular lost work requires more than saying that Tertullian, Epiphanius and Adamantius all mention the same canonical verse.
The catalogue of Marcion’s readings must be distinguished from the catalogue of arguments used against Marcion. A surviving argument can be older than its surviving witness, and a later author’s express attribution can arise from an earlier writer’s unassigned quotation. These possibilities must be tested before apparent agreements are counted as independent testimony.

Sources and verification record

  1. Tertullian, Adversus Marcionem IV, Latin text in Ernest Evans’s presentation and Book V. Latin passages and subsection anchors supply the primary basis for the attribution register. All 64 chapters are represented in the coverage ledger. Local digital text contains occasional transcription defects; linked source context controls over a mechanically extracted snippet.
  2. Evans, scripture-reference index. Used as a finding aid, with broad discussion ranges and questionable locators preserved as such. Not treated as an inventory of Marcion’s text.
  3. Holmes’s public-domain English, Book IV and Book V. Editorial Bible links were extracted for the finding aid. Headings, reference links and explanatory glosses are distinguished from Tertullian’s Latin.
  4. Epiphanius, Panarion 42, Holl Greek text, First1KGreek transcription; Frank Williams, The Panarion, Book I (2nd ed., 2009), especially 42.10–12, printed pp.294–363. All 78 Gospel and 40 Pauline items are mapped here. English item descriptions are concise analytical paraphrases, not a reproduction of Williams’s translation.
  5. Holl’s apparatus at the initial Luke 7:23 scholion notes the distinction between an interpretation directed against John and Epiphanius’s subsequent explanation. Its point is treated as an editorial argument, not as ancient testimony in its own right.
  6. Dialogue of Adamantius, Greek text supplied by the user, references to the even-numbered Greek pages in W.H. van de Sande Bakhuyzen’s GCS edition (1901). Verified contrasts include pp.2; 10–12; 50–60; 88–102; 112; 200–202. A dialogue character’s attribution is reported as such, without equating the character with the compiler’s personal possession.
  7. Irenaeus, Irenaeus AH 3.7; Irenaeus AH 4.13; Irenaeus AH 4.34; compare AH 1.27.2 for the earlier general canonical portrait. The first three supply surviving controls. They are not presented as surviving leaves of the lost Adversus Marcionem.
  8. Earlier Alexandrian witness register; Epiphanius access/order study; Irenaean sources in Epiphanius study. These current documents were read for this comparison; their conclusions were rechecked where a new wording distinction was material.
  9. Earlier Adamantius–Maximus–Eusebius comparison. Used only as a control for recycled dialogue material and reframing, not proof of direct Adamantius→Eusebius or universal Irenaean dependence.
  10. Dieter T. Roth, Towards a New Reconstruction of the Text of Marcion’s Gospel (Edinburgh PhD, 2009), and his 2015 reconstruction as consulted in the earlier witness audit. Modern reconstruction is not characterized as universally ignoring evidential gradations.
  11. Gianmario Cattaneo’s study of the anti-Marcionite Luke resurrection fragment (2020). Attribution control for material formerly cited under Origen; it is not used as a secure third-century Gospel witness.
  12. J. David Stark’s 2023 study of the Didymus fragment. A fragmentary/transmitted witness, distinguished from a complete surviving Marcionite text.

Boundaries: This is a source-attribution audit, not a new critical edition of Marcion’s Gospel or Apostolikon. The 118-item crosswalk is complete as a comparison inventory; absence of a precise Tertullian or Alexandrian match is explicitly recorded. The ancillary editorial index is not a fully verified verse-by-verse quotation apparatus. No claim is made to have recovered a lost Irenaean manuscript or demonstrated every later author’s actual reading process.

Prepared 7 November 2026. Ancient wording is distinguished from modern editorial identification; English explanations and translations of short primary triggers are supplied for this audit.
